Becoming King/Emperor of Entire World
« on: January 20, 2016, 06:43:38 pm »

Has anyone ever thought about way to implement becoming king of the entire world, perhaps through both Fortress and Quest modes?  That would be interesting.  Obviously it would  be extremely difficult and rare to accomplish, but if it was a possibility in the game it would certainly add to the powerful unique allure of this genre.  This game exists 75% in the imagination, as there are no graphics but numerous rules to simulate the natural and psychological laws to be overcome.  Thus making "out there" imaginative possibilities nevertheless possible can only help.  Perhaps you would somehow make all other kingdoms your vassals, have the ability to levy taxes and manage things as a large empire.

Also I would add it would be interesting to add a trial and legal decision simulator.  As king or lord of a particular realm you could have everyone from peasants to extremely important personages come to you and request decisions on complicated matters, and judgments of guilt or acquittal.  This could substantially impact the history of the game depending on the importance of the case and your kingdom's influence.  You could either conduct these decisions yourself or delegate them to your ministers.  Some of these legal decisions at Court could lead to civil war, increased corruption, rebellion, or other strife.

This is actually probably easy to accomplish.

First, destroy all other civilizations, or generate a world with only dwarves.

Then, wait for a dwarf in your fort to inherit the throne.

Finally, take an adventurer, kill the dwarf, and take over.

In terms of game mechanics, taking over the world is doable, but pointless. Ruling sites in adventurer mode doesn't actually effect anything beyond flavour text.

That should change once we can send armies out on missions, though.

The framework already exists since NPC rulers can do it, Toady just needs to make an interface for it.

I think to make it interesting you could have a personal guard, get a queen/king spouse, and choose to be diabolically evil or saintly.  If you are evil you could ally with goblin races and turn the entire world into a gigantic hell.  You would have ministers and economic and population statistics and your decisions would affect the prosperity of the world.  Of course once king you could continue to adventure as usual, or personally lead your army in battle instead of leaving it to a general.  Again, getting to the point where you can become a king should be extremely difficult, emperor should be nearly impossible and legendary among the community.  And once in power, you have to uncover plots against your rule and intrigue.  Basically this is the ultimate optional end game.  With more power you must look over your shoulder more than ever.  Someone is always waiting in the wings to snatch it from you while the weight of the world's fate rests on your shoulders.

I suspect that as emprorer of the entire world, the hardest thing would be beating subservient populations into submission, and preventing them from rebelling and breaking away. There aren't many mechanics for this in DF, though.

Mechanic of beating people is one of the most advanced df features.
And you can already do that with starting mini zombie apocalypse in the settlements you dont like.

Which contrast with the way submissive and conquered populations behave.

If I get the time to learn to code in C I can try to make a mod to this effect.  If someone else does please put imperator in your credits lol.  But really, I think this should be in the vanilla game at some point.  The game would truly be never ending and a continuous challenge to see how long you can hold on to power and affect the game world in humongous ways, without dying in battle, being imprisoned, or being assassinated.  You could levy taxes, found new cities, create walls like the wall of Hadrian, launch massive campaigns against your foes that span decades, etc....  You could try to make dragons, goblins, the undead all bow before your throne.  Again, to even get to the level of king should be extremely difficult and take tons of adventuring as a normal human/demigod.

Regarding rebellion: You would have certain nobles and influential ministers that act disobediently/suspiciously, do not obey all your directives or actively assist in war efforts.  You could subject these nobles to imprisonment/torture, imprisonment/interrogation, or just let it be as coincidental and no threat.  Obviously engaging in any of these actions could expedite any covert actions being conducted against you and be more dangerous than helpful.

Regarding how to become king: I would assume you would have to depose an unjust king in adventure mode and then be elected the new king by the people, or something to this effect.  Then, you could choose to turn against the people and become an evil tyrant yourself if you wish.  Or also perhaps become king through the dwarf fortress method someone already posted.

One thing that always fascinated me with the study of ancient Roman history (who were essentially the rulers of the entire known world at that time), was the great extent to which the reigning emperors were deposed.  When you survey history it is a continuous rise and fall of emperors who then face rebellions and are replaced by other emperors.  Many do not even get to live out their reign without being murdered or slaughtered.  And yet it is shocking why so many in history have envied them and wanted their position!  Given that it is one of the most deadly positions you could probably hold, and one of the riskiest, you almost wonder why so many would have wanted to be the emperor in Rome.  Yet still, countless dreamed of taking that throne.  History was essentially a brute struggle of will to power.  This is how any emperor modeled in Dwarf Fortress could and should be, given the power of the engine already in simulating the rise and of course the fall of kingdoms.  If you make it to this level, you better have the tenacity, acumen, and play experience necessary to remain in the position, along with all of the perks to which it could avail your character.
