Master of Orion 2 is well worth a look (but avoid 3 at all costs...).

Imperialism is somewhat different to Imperialism 2 but not necessarily any worse.  Some of the historical scenarios are quite challenging.

Also, King of Dragon Pass, for something fun and somewhat different (maybe not so complex but then try questing...).
