starting in a tree?

I just started my first adventurer in years. I started on top a tree. Is that normal for an elf?

That's typical for anyone starting in a forest retreat, and it can randomly happen from fast-travel. Press 'h' to grab hold of something (sheathe weapons to free your hands first), then any direction. Or you can try fast traveling away, and you'll more likely end up on the ground.

Elves live in trees grown in orderly rows now, so yes, it's perfectly normal.
