Pour it into a river, and then draw your water from that.

EDIT: I was kidding; you can't purify muddy water. But if you get thirsty enough, you will be able to drink muddy water, and feel slightly less wretched for doing so.

You don't, you fill a container with water from a river and call it a day.

If you're in a frozen hellscape then you can fill a container with snow, make a campfire and 'I'nteract with the container and choose the option to heat it by the campfire and turn the snow into water.

What about when you're underground with nothing but muddy water rivers?

1: Find and take bucket
2: Fill bucket with water
3: Throw water onto ground to create small pool of water

You now have portable water that can produce pools of infinite water, that you can then draw more water from. Your best friend for any desert or cavern

Swim out into the lakes and sometimes there are deeper parts where the water isn't muddy. Or you could find a creature and kill it and drink the blood.

Now I'm going to point you to the Adventure Mode Little Questions thread, this didn't need its own topic.

You're all overthinking it. I'm not sure if it works in the latest update, but all you have to do is remove it and pour it on the tile you're standing on, then pick it up again. This will also allow you to have unlimited water, alcohol or any liquid because "Pool of X" never disappears no matter how much you use it.

Maybe it's not a bad idea to get in the habit of doing it the non-exploity way just in case it gets closed. But Toady has known about it for a long time, and for a long time we've expected it to close any update now. It'll probably be a shocker when it does, anyway.

If a character gets really thirsty, they can drink muddy water or animal blood. They're both as likely to contain bacteria that will make you shit out the contents of your entire torso cavity.
