Ugh, typical
« on: June 03, 2008, 03:27:00 pm »

My mayor mandated that I make three shell items. No problem, I just told my bone carver to make shell crafts and he made three at once - mandate done.

Straight away, a dwarf gets a fey mood and demands a shell.

Never follow the nobles' demands. Ever.
Just kill them. If a mayor gets uppity, just kill him and train his successor. If he was the founder, the broker, the manager, and the hoardmaster, then simply assign other dwarves.

I'm fairly sure that nothing bad can happen if you kill the nobles.
Fairly sure, at least.

You don't get migrants for a long time.

I love migrants.  I wait with V and hit it every time a migrant comes into view, giggling like a schoolgirl.  It's like they're pokemon or something.  Soapers, Milkers, Potash/Lye Makers, the odd Peasant or two, Glassmakers, they excite me the most, because I get to draft them.  A few minutes ago  I gave my Lye Maker a bone crossbow and fifteen catbone bolts and sent him out on a suicide mission against a pack of undead horses.  My engravings rule.

Exactly my point. I can't stand migrants. Too many dwarves slow down everything and I don't have enough jobs for them.

I was so happy that in the latest goblin siege that the 20 migrants stuck outside were just dismembered.

How in the world do you guys get anything done without haulers? I have like 40 right now and it's still not enough, I'll be glad when the next wave gets here so I can finally get around to shifting all the ore to the new metalsmithing area upstairs...

My current fort has 33 dwarves.
13 of them are haulers.
It is not enough.

I put my legendary dwarves with super agility on hauling duties.

Everybody hauls in my forts. Sounds silly, except that super-agile craftsdwarf is actual more efficient fetching his own raw materials than sitting in the shop waiting for Urist McPeasant to trudge down to the quarry.

I'm starting to suspect that I should make everybody an engraver or a pump operator or siege operator and get them Legendary just so I can have haulers who actually get stuff done in a reasonable timeframe...

Masons.

Have 'em work in workshops that only they can enter, with others only the skilled guys can enter.

Make a hell-ton of blocks.

???

Profit!

There are no useless dwarves.

Are all your walls and floors smoothed? Why not?

Is there any loose stone cluttering up a dining room, a hallway, the entrance to your fort, a tomb? Dwarves like clean floors.

Do you have enough statues? (No, you can never have enough statues.)

Do you have paved stone roads leading to your entrance? From every side of the map?

Is your military a truly terrifying sight to behold? Have you lost enough dwarves in humorous sparring accidents to fill an entirely new fortress?
