Baton Drop
« on: January 13, 2016, 09:54:30 pm »

So, a friend and I want to run a succession game. He played a year, sent the file to the download site, and I downloaded the "region1" and inserted it into my save folder.

I changed it to region2, having already an extant region1. I run the game, and it's not there.

The obvious problem that comes to mind is that I've been playing with a tileset (phoebus) and my friend is not.

I feel like I have to do some copying and pasting of files, but I'm not sure which ones to do.

We're both playing the latest version.

Help?

Make sure you extract the save in such a way that it creates the directory data/save/region2 under your Dwarf Fortress top level directory.  You should have region1 and region2 side by side.

Once that's done, make sure you are using the correct start menu choice -- either "Continue Playing" (if the fortress is still active), or "Start Playing" (if the fortress has been abandoned).

and that content of region1 and region2 look similar, e.g. it wasn't actually extracted to save/region2/region2

What you can also do is backup your own Region1 (Name it BAKRegion1 or something like that) for the time being and put your friends Regions 1 in the save folder until you've wrapped up your turn.

So, it's actually got nothing to do with the tileset?

Glad to know I was barking up the wrong tree. Thanks, y'all, I'll try the backup approach and report back if it doesn't work.

Changing tilesets can do odd things to your raws, but shouldn't stop the game showing up on the menu.

Did you close down DF after renaming the folder?  I believe DF only reads the save file list when it first loads up.

No, it reads it each time it loads raws.
I.E: "Create new world" - Abort - Save List was refreshed.

Is this a definite? I'm pretty sure I had a succession game hit this exact problem because of tilesets.

Nope.  It started as a Probably, is now downgraded to a Possibly, and is expected to hit Wild Guess by lunchtime tomorrow.

I'd go with your remembered experience over my wonky understanding of things :)

Yeah, changed the name of the original and let the second one have "region1." I didn't move the original, and it still shows up in the menu.

Maybe it is the tileset...
