Minor canceled die
« on: January 01, 2016, 02:39:39 pm »

I can't figure out how to kill my children and babies. They don't seem to obey burrows, and I can't find online another way to move them or kill them. If I could at least figure out how to transport the children, I could make them simply starve in a locked room or something...

Anyone willing to help out a noob here? These kids are about half my population and eating up all my supplies and strange mood chances.

Well, you could use a Dwarven Atom Smasher

How do i get them to the atom smasher, though? That's my main problem.

I'm no DF expert either, but I'd say have your atom smasher room be a gathering hall, and have the rest of your dwarves be in burrows. Once the coast is clear and you got a room full of children, obliterate their existence.

Just be prepared for very emotionally distraught dwarves as their children are suddenly wiped from existence.

One of my finds with kids and burrows...

If you stick them in a burrow that contains nothing, they will ignore it.

They also won't interact with anything outside that burrow.  They'll just sit in place and play by themselves till they pass out.

If you're going to use a burrow to get them someplace, make sure the burrow has something they will interact with.

Children do obey civilian alerts. Just put all your adults on temporary military duty so they won't follow the children to wherever you want to lock them up.

You could also place an atom smasher in a corridor leading to the rooms / dinning hall. Whenever you notice a child in the corridor, lock him in and smash away.

Possible corridor layout:

This allows for systematic removal of unlucky children. Originally designed for cats.

You could also nurture the young dwarves, create family housing pods, and dedicate nice places for the children to visit so as to improve their attitudes.

Burrows don't say "get inside this box" they say "don't do jobs outside this box" it's an important distinction because children don't do jobs. If you create a burrow and put a meeting zone in it children will go there.

Blasphemy.

Children are annoying.

to OP: I suspect, you are just competing for most antisocial contributor award on bay12forums, if not: Dwarves have very efficient family planning methods aka population caps (normal, child and absolute cap), if you don't want children -> use them. If you have problems with food and booze supply -> learn to play (proper farming, stockpile, kitchen, still settings).

I prefer to just set the child/baby caps in init settings to zero, and putting up with any migrant children.

If you must rid yourself of them, I'm trying to recall if lever management profiles still allow you to assign a child to them.
