Clowns and the Circus
« on: December 27, 2015, 06:37:56 pm »

Never been able to find what was mentioned in the title.  I TRIED, and wasn't able.  Now, I randomly find it and I am completely murdered.  I really never expected them to be as strong as that.  Wow, I was just blown away.  The fire is the main problem I think.  Any tips on how to beat those bastards next time I find them?

Their attributes are somewhat randomized, so nothing can be guaranteed to work in all cases.
There is a reliable method, though.

Is the whole fire thing random?  Did I just get super unlucky?

More or less. Although since a number of clowns are randomly generated for each world, it's likely that at least one type will have something nasty like that.

Some clowns can be turned into roasts.  Very large, very heavy, very valuable roasts. :)
But yes, procedurally generated, although you can kinda sorta estimate what some of them might be based on their names, especially the dinosaur-ish ones.  They're the most tasty.

Yes, the first time you encounter them is quite a shock...

I'm a bit surprised about comments on eating clowns, since my experience has been that they're either non organic (salt and fire seems to be common) and won't generate bad thought when their remains are hauled away, or organic, in which case all I've seen have generated bad thoughts and thus probably are considered sapient (often various animal based brutes). My most recent experience is from 0.40.24, though.

I've used two main methods to deal with them:
- Menacing spike arrays on a mine cart repeater for those that behave properly and try to invade. Drawbridges to stop them before the actually get in, since some of them can take a lot of spike thrusts.
- Cave-in for campers in my entrance tunnels.

In addition to this, I've also used a ballista to get rid of a couple of campers hovering motion less in the air down in the circus itself.

If you need to send your militia to battle fire hurling clowns it helps to first pour some water in the area (1/7 depth is enough), as that will help dousing your militia on fire. That method ought to help with fire imps as well.

There are far worse clowns than the fiery ones. Fear anything listed as having deadly dust. A clown with a  lethal syndrome inducing deadly dust is about as bad as it gets, particularly if it is also inorganic, flies and is made of something particularly tough like steel. They are procedurally generated so how nasty a given clown is can vary from a weak entity that a cat can kill with a single paw swipe to one that is fort ending.
