Limited fire clay and cavern issues
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:50:27 pm »

I discover a handful of fire clay tiles on the southeast corner of my map, far from my centrally located fortress. These tiles have been covered by moss now that I've breached the cavern, and are too far away to be trampled clean, and as it's the only clay on my map, I'd like to keep it (if only to protect against a potter's moods). I haven't found enough tiles of it to really be willing to experiment on my own, and I'm worried that trying to construct dirt roads and the like will change them to regular clay.

Designating a dirt (not paved) road over it will keep it harvestable fire clay.

Quietust, what would we ever do without you and your endless knowledge of v0.23a?
I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

There was some trick with building floor grates over the tiles.

If you have any walls of clay, designate your clay zone over/adjacent to them. Walls don't "grow over" and remain usable for sand/clay collection. You must designate at least one tile of floor for the collecting dwarf to stand on.

Haven't tried of late, but floor grates probably still work. I think you first need to clear the floor tile.

Incidentally, potter isn't a moodable skill. You don't need clay for moods.

Yes, building a floor grate on top of a clear(ed) sand/clay tile will keep it open for sand/clay collection. If you're unlucky the tile will grow over in between you clearing it and the placement of the grate, in which case you have to redo the process.
