Is the migrant system as we know it going to be replaced soon?
It's always felt weird and annoying, and the thing of fully customising your starting dwarves never seemed right also.
Scenarios arc which should be the big release after the next arc (Myths, artifacts and magic dorfs), should revamp the whole migrant system. So...6 months of updating and bug fixing for this release, a year or so for the next arc, 6 months of bug fixing updating.....

So, not soon. But it's planned.

I don't foresee 6 months of bug fixing for this release. It wasn't that long last time, and .42 is a smaller release. I'd guess Toady is working on the next release by February or March. From there, the next release could take anywhere from 9 to 18 months based on the little bit we know about the plans. Then another big fix break, then start work on that next release which includes the starting scenarios. This assumes there isn't a major change in the near-term dev plans...which is probably not a safe assumption.

Um...July 7th to January 7th is pretty much 6 months.

I mean, yes you're right of course this release is smaller and most of the major bugs will be gone by the next update. So 6 months is an overestimate.

Still, I wouldn't mind if Toady spent 6 months just cleaning up adventure mode, 64-bit testing and dealing with old long-standing bugs.

--edit. But we also wants artifacts and scenarios and adventure thieves and gambling and trolls playing scream-ball and ships and multi-tile killer whales and an economy....

Actually I think it's 3d6 months.

Um...July 7th to January 7th is pretty much 6 months.

That wasn't all bug fixing. 0.40.14 and 0.40.19/20 were (minor) feature releases, .14 bringing emotions, .19 gelding and .20 job priorities.

The big releases get all the attention, but for all the complaining about the long dev cycles, we shouldn't forget the occasions when Toady actually does implement features quickly.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Extra features and suggestions are planned as part of this cycle too. It's not all bug fixing. Over on the announcements thread Toady kind of sums up what's planned for this period.

It really depends on what you mean by 'Flavour'. Is it flavour text like how Magic:The Gathering cards have them? No, but then, there's probably nothing that is flavour in that manner in dwarf fortress.(Outside of dwarven beardstyles)

Dwarven Beard styles should represent Clan and kingdom and are passed down generations. Would be a neat feature.
