FEATURES OF M.O.R.E.
http://www.morethegame.com/about

I was reading thorugh the various features. Here is a random one:

"M.O.R.E. will also pay special attention to such gaming aspects as mineral extraction, food transportation, raw materials, and people. It will contain leaders of the colonies, ship captains, spy masters, diplomats and scientists who will all have a significant impact on the course of the game, bringing into it their own stories, motivation and problems."

Something like this could work very well in Stellaris.

I am confused how does this game "break the status quo of 4x games"?

Now that is a good question. The devs are quite active as I see [Steam + game forum], so ask them!  :D
Anyway, I had a deja vu while reading this dev reply on Steam: "In base version of M.O.R.E. you'll have only simple automated ground combats. But we plan to create our 1st DLC about enhanced ground combats."
Heh I was talking about this in the Stellaris topic, that improving this part of the game would be excellent "expansion material".  :)

I might take a look. I'm a sucker for the genre, and I've got the weekend off.

The earliest backing can give access to is alpha/"aplha", whereas it says the current status is pre-alpha, so presumably not.

Yep, it's in "pre-alpha".

Also, here is an interview with one of the devs: http://explorminate.net/2015/10/26/m-o-r-e-qa-part-1/

Some interesting stuff:

"Question: Let’s talk planetary management. One of the biggest pitfalls of any 4X is micromanagement. How is it handled

Answer: We have a slightly different approach to space colonization than other 4x games. Colonization won’t be so easy and, even if you colonize a planet, it may be so expensive to maintain that it’s better to abandon it. So, you’ll want to have a few quality colonies rather than a large quantity of them. Also you’ll be able to group those colonies and manage them all at once. The final stage of getting rid of micromanagement hell is the creation of Dyson spheres. With this technology your planets and moons in a system will be destroyed, and a single Dyson Sphere object will be created instead."
