Diomedes would soon leave for Thrace, but first he would Visit the offices of the Scrinium Barbarorum and obtain all the pertinent information he could about the situation there, including agents active in the area, the diplomatic situation, and recent events. Then, he would pack his bags and travel to his posting. Once there, he would meet with his new subordinates to get communication flowing.

Hektor had business at the Makris villa. He was planning to meet with a construction foreman about expanding the villa to include a small chapel as well as new meeting rooms, a new dining hall and a walled garden. In fact, the renovation and expansion would continue until the hyperpyron payment had been used up.

And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the Assaulted Lanterns Magma Artillery' - King Id I of the Assaulted Lanterns

Sidonius looked at the officer in front of him. The man was unremarkable, just like the majority of the bureaucrats and officers these days.

Lord, thou dost really test us with these...

"My dear sir, it is a pleasure ot make your aquaintance. I wanted to discuss some matters of military nature, seeing how your units is both one of the most vital and final units of this empire. Truly, nothing ever happens without your soldiers marching. Which is why I think it is high time we began working otogether, for the glroy of our Basileus."

Sidonius stroked his beard, wondering how to best broach the subject. The Tagmata were stuck in the city unless given a direct order to move out, but no such command could be given and even if it were, it was likely that this lot would not like to move very much. Guile had to be used.

"As head of the Frumentarii service in the northern borders, I sense there is a lot of opportunity there to exploit- given the squables of the loccal princes and the fact that they abandoned their ancient pledges of obedience to the throne of our Empire. I know that court offers a lot of opportunity for a man like you, but these people are ripe for striking down - more glory is won with a single sword stroke than with a thousand finely crafted words. I possess fairly reliable intelligence, which I'm wiling to share, but I need to be sure of your confidentiality. Are you able to offer me that? Trust?"

Trust, heh. The fool probably forgot that this word existed, but it was high time to raise these people into action, even by offering them a glimmer of gain.

Sidonius attempts to placate Caius Obtus into helping him with special operations in Serbia - Frumentarii need muscle.
