Dunno, even without AE FTL is a pretty good and fun game.

Just trying Captains Edition now. A lot of things are different in ways I'm not sure I'm okay with (Attacked at the first star of a new system? Really?) and I see entirely too much of that two-shot scattershot laser. Growing pains, I guess.

It's pretty random. So much stuff, that you can look at AE as easy mode, with original being simple-easy mode.

AE is nice. CE is "better" due to more content, but that's what mods are. More content, but maybe not as balanced as the original+.

There's heaps more to do though.

I've never felt the need to add a tonne of poorly balanced items to my FTL game.
