Can I run it in an old Windows XP?
« on: November 08, 2015, 03:03:41 pm »

I have an old laptop with Windows XP, and I realized nowadays Java nor Flash work with that O.S.

So, can I run Dwarf Fortress and the most important tools (like Dwarf Therapist) in that system?

Technically yes, but be prepared to be patient, as the FPS is bound to be lousy (I've tried saves that crashes on my modern machines on a 10+ year old XP machine, and it runs without crashing, but very slowly, so I had to give up anyway).

What sort of RAM and CPU are we talking about here? 'Cause you're probably going to be crashing on long worldgens.

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

If you're willing to forego the newer updates, 40d doesn't have nearly as much to keep track of and so will run significantly better on older systems. I remember playing it on my old XP laptop back in 08, ran pretty well considering.

I don't think SDL or Qt have any issues in XP, so you should be fine for DF and Therapist regardless of version, but performance will be iffy the more up-to-date you go, as it's all content and very little optimization.

Mmm, then better to wait until I come back to my home town to play. It seems that the best case scenario is to be able to play with lousy performance. It's not worth the effort.

Thank you

I played on my old computer, before it melted, and that ran XP. This computer is Vista. I guess I'm just used for four fps and it doesn't bother me so much any more.

Indeed. there is no software reason for df to not run under XP. the only problem will be the processor since that is bound to be aged

I think you'll be fine. I used XP up until 2013, and I never had an XP specific related problems.

Itll run. Itll most certainly run. But she aint likin it. Actually on a 1x1 embark using 2012, im able to pull cheist 70fps out of it for the first year. But it starts dropping off pretty hard onve i hit about 60-70 dwarves.

XP is perfectly good for running DF. It's not like you need DirectX 10 or 11 to run this! The computer HW specs have next to nothing to do with the OS (XP). Laptops are also generally built to be able to cool their processors efficiently enough at room temperature to avoid problems. It will just run the fan more often, that's all. It is possible for something to melt in your computer, but this is often caused by faulty construction, such as a heatsink that is not properly bolted down or installed without thermal paste. Otherwise a modern processor will just throttle itself once it passes an operating temperature threshold and may even shut down to avoid hardware damage.
