How to get my dwarf out of a cage?
« on: October 31, 2015, 07:37:58 pm »

One of my dwarves got into a fight in my cage trap area with some undead.
Somehow, he survived but ended up in a cage trap  :o

How did he end up in a cage trap and how can I get him out?
I set up a lever and selected "j: Link to a cage", with the idea of letting him out that way but I get the message "there is nothing that can be linked to".

May have fallen asleep or unconscious on a cage trap.

Have you built the cage? A lever cannot be linked to an unbuilt cage.

I don't understand what you mean.
He's in the cage; somehow he got caught in one of the cage traps I set up in my entrance hall.
Yes, I built them all I believe.

Separate from a cage trap, a cage itself can be built as though it were like furniture or a workshop. When placed in this way, it may be used to designate a zoo, like you would set up a bedroom or a dining room. When built, it may also be linked to a lever, and activating the lever would release the creatures in the cage, as well as unbuild it.

b > j for building a cage in place. It's how you assign for animals to be stuff in them if you have too many or want to trade them to people.

Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

It's complicated, as dwarves can't be assigned to cages or pastures like animals can. For any other creature it would be as simple as unassigning it from the cage, or assigning it to another cage, restraint, or a pasture.

For a dwarf, you have to take their cage, build it like you were to set up a zoo, link that cage to a lever, and then pull the lever, releasing the dwarf.

I tried building another cage but as soon as it was finished, for some reason a goblin was put in it before I could do anything with it.
How do I get the dwarf into a built cage before releasing him with the lever.

Ah, ok, thanks.

I did finally get the dwarf into a cage but it took several cages filled with undead first.
Linked the dwarf to a lever and he was freed.
Thanks for the replies and tips guys.

Like endlessblaze said, you can use x in any build menu to display individual items instead of categories.  When you want to build a specific cage containing a specific creature, you just scroll through the list to find the caged creature you need.  If you let the game choose, it will build the nearest item, which may not be the one you want.
