Bone armor
« on: September 17, 2015, 06:50:38 pm »

I looked over the wiki but couldn't find much in regards to bone armor and it's usefulness. Is it, at the very least, applicable to have my dwarves wielding bone armor and more or less survive encounters?

Bone is about on par with leather - so around the bottom of the armor "tier" structure.

Well, bone is slightly more effective than leather but a lot less sturdy than metal. A bone srmor can help against some crutters or unarmed and less dangerous enemies, but don-t expect to see a civilian in bone armor to survive against real threats. I suggest you to give them leather and bone armor plus a metal helmet. It's pretty light and will give them some possibility to survive.

That's good advice guys, thanks. After looking a little more, I think I can adorn metal armor with bone? I'll have to experiment. My primitive hunter-gatherer tribe may have to suffice with inferior armors.. more FUN : )

It only affects trade value.

Yes, by decorating armor with bone.  It takes some effort to get exactly what you want decorated.  It only affects value though..

I'm bumping an older thread here, but I figure it's better than making a new one for a bone armour question.

How do I set Bone Armour and Shell Armour as materials I want my dwarves to wear in the equipment screen? I only see material specifications for metal and leather. Are they considered to be leather? I'd really rather not have to manually assign each individual piece. Finding all those matching bone gauntlets and greaves, and replacing them when I make more copper equipment takes forever.

I'm trying to have grades of armour as I gradually forge semi-decent stuff from copper. The newer, expendable dwarves, and my marksdwarves squad get the lighter, less protective stuff, and I save my tank armour for my melee squad.

I think the info is on the wiki somewhere, but the trick is to specify the color to be white, as bone is the only white armor (I guess you could screw it up by buying grown featherwood armor from the elves, though).

But I made a ton of miscellaneous armour bits from both bone and shell. I can't have them be used automatically?

Sometimes, having bone, leather, and shell separated by creature type is more annoying than fun. I've got to try a fort with Modest Mod. I think they made materials into generic "leather", "bone", and "shell" in that mod.

I think shell is green. So White (bone) helms and Green (shell) gauntlets for example would work.
I can't think of any way to separate by creature type. But then I also find all the different leather types annoying and just specify "leather".
