"z" key to zoom to location doesn't work
« on: September 28, 2015, 07:28:29 pm »

I'm having trouble zooming in to see items, characters and events of interest.
When I select "z" to zoom to location, I see the general area but must manually search through an area of a couple of screens before I can find what I'm interested in.
Is the cursor supposed to centre on the item of interest?
What am I doing wrong?

I recall having that kind of problem a while ago, probably late last year, but I don't remember what caused it as it was eventually fixed, although it might have been related to the tile set handling. One of the problems seemed to be when the event was close to the edge so the screen couldn't center on the location, but there was also one variant that happened even though the event should have been possible to be centered on.
At the time I moved the cursor up/down or left/right to find where it was located based on the movement of the cursor.

Double-check if your Caps Lock is turned on. DF treats "z" and "Z" as different keys.

Caps lock is ok.
I've tried both zooming the view in and zooming the view out with the mouse wheel before pressing "z"(I'm using the Mouse Controls in DFHack, I wonder if this has something to do with the problem), then pressing "z" to zoom to location, and no matter where the event is located, whether near the centre or edge of map, it doesn't zoom in to the event location.
Often the event will happen on entirely different Z levels to the Z level it zooms to and two or three screens away.

I'm using the Lazy Newb Pack with the Phoebus tile set, and while I zoom in/out with the mouse wheel, I haven't enabled mouse controls, and don't have problems (any more, long time since I did).
I assume you've double checked that you're zooming to the correct event, not the one before/after. Also, zooming is useless for some events, e.g. "cancels eat due to item not available" since that zooms to the dorf subject to the event rather than the offending item. Also, I assume you use the zoom function from the announcement screen (as opposed to, for instance, the zoom function from the units screen).

You might want to disable the DFHack mouse controls to see if the problem goes away, and even disable DFHack altogether for a test.

Hmmm.
I tried DF without DFHack Mouse Control and now the zoom works ok, both zooming to announcements and zooming to view dwarves from the Units list; although the cursor is sometimes hard to see and off to the right side of the screen, the dwarves I've zoomed to were under the X cursor.

It can also matter if you hit the key 5 seconds wrong since it zooms to where the event occurred, not necessarily the dwarf that threw the event. (I.E. if a dorf can't get a unit of booze but then decides to go build a wall across the map, you might get where he lost the booze rather than the 20 units away he is now.)
