My chasm finally red-lined from the magma aqueduct spill, but when I walked some people up to it they were ambushed by hoards of batmen!  Could the batmen have been created BEFORE the red-lining but just didn't pop out of ambush until my dwarves came by?

They keep "springing from ambush" endlessly!  Argh, I thought redlining the chasm would take care of this.

does surrounding your main bridges with raised drawbridges stop chasm attacks? seems to stop river attacks.

Yes, raised bridges as handrails prevent the chasmcreatures from emerging. It also makes it difficult to chasm anything, but you could always make a more easily trapped area your chasm-spot (if any).

Creatures who "sprung from surprise attack" don't pop into existance from thin air... They are creatures who got out of the chasm somewhere and been roaming the map, hidden from your own forces until he/it attacked.

This mean that if you have a long corridor leading from the chasm to a part of your fortress, they could have climbed up before the red line and are all waiting for you there. Happened to me the last time, they went up by the very access corridor I used to build the magma feed!

Sometimes they start a fight with other stealth creatures. The result: Body parts appearign in an empty coridor from seemingly nowhere.
