Fastdwarf and Combat
« on: September 22, 2015, 04:46:58 am »

So, I'm fairly new to Dwarf Fortress - still learning my way to ultimate dwarfiness, and upon seeing many, many people saying that dfhack was essentially a necessity for a multitude of reasons, I stumbled upon the 'fastdwarf' command. Now, I don't particularly want a cheaty experience with Dwarf Fortress, but that single command makes setting up a fortress 10000000000x quicker and less painful than without. My question, however, was that, if I were to leave it on and get invaded, would it make all of my fighting dwarves super OP? I don't want them to just mow through the enemy forces - that'd just take the fun out of it!

If it would indeed turn my dwarves into super-soldiers, is there a way to make it so the fastdwarf applies to labour, but not actual combat? Or will I just have to deactivate it every invasion to have a fair fight?

(Ab)using fastdwarf regularly takes most of the callenge away from the building part of DF. Similarly, it would allow you to be extremely sloppy with your defenses without much penalty, since you'd just teleport your squads to where they're needed. Still, if that's how you want to play it it's your fun; there is no "correct" way of playing DF.

The above said without me actually having used Fastdwarf except once (to move a bugged dorf that refused to move, but he eventually thirsted to death anyway).

I would learn to play Dwarf Fortress first, then decide for yourself what tweaks you feel are necessary to your own enjoyment of the game. The whole 'DF is unplayable without installing hundreds of extra features' is very much an exaggeration.

Fastdwarf has two modes - one of them makes your dwarves faster (by manually adjusting every dwarf's job timers every tick), and the other one makes EVERYTHING faster (by setting one of Toady's debug flags built into the game). For gameplay balance purposes, the latter is marginally preferable - enemies will at least have a fighting chance, but it's more likely that battles will quickly devolve into units chasing each other across the map (ideally accompanied by the Benny Hill theme).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
