Hmm, I have a walled area next to a volcano in my current embark area...
Do it! DO IT! Do and post the results, FOR !!SCIENCE!!. It's your duty as a dwarf to do it!

Yes, they'll swim, but only for as long as it takes for them to die...
Which shouldn't be enough time for the player to notice them swimming. Or is it? Hum... another topic for dwarven science: how long time can a troll swim in lava before it dies?  ::)
I am surely going to try at least that capturing of magma crabs. Testing area needed!

Magma crabs are fairly weak in melee range, and they have only three body parts so it's easy to get a lethal hit on them.

Seal them behind fortifications. With a bridge to block there sight when there are no invaders.

But until your squads get to melee range... or the invaders, for what it matters. Hum... elves use wooden armor. Wood burns pretty nicely...  ::)

Aren't there other magma-dwelling creatures you could use that are better in melee?

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Magma-man and fire-man, both nasty building destroyers. But I believe imps are the most common magma-dwelling creatures (along magma-crabs), and they also have ranged attack that set things on fire and are not as flimsy as the crabs. I don't know of any other magma dweller.
