How to make military aggresive towards passive animals

So I want my marksdwarfs to take down passive animals hanging around outside my walls when on patrol. Cant find any option in the military screen. any suggestions?

Oh sorry, I should have said im trying to avoid the use of the kill command because its kinda buggy and tedious with marksdwarfs behind walls. In old DF you could set your dwarfs to aggresive somehow.

Yeah, so for example some ducks came cruising into my area and I want to take them down but when I set my squad to "kill duck", they cant path to it and just end up standing around until I cancel the order. I'd love to find a "kill animals on sight" option somewhere

Currently, both military and hunters are terrifyingly incapable of effectively attacking flying critters.

I think OP was thinking of the very old military option "ignore/harass dangerous animals", which disappeared with the military re-work for 0.31 (the last version that shows it is 40d, about seven years/three major releases ago).

Going by the description on the wiki, military is _always_ in "harass" mode now, with no option to change it. Furthermore, it looks like military never harassed harmless animals like ducks unless specifically ordered. A "kill animals on sight" option doesn't exist and probably never did. You can only order your archers to kill and hope for the best. Cancelling and re-issuing a kill order _sometimes_ gets a few stuck archers locked onto a new target for a while.

Or just build a roof over most outside installations and secure passages with doors and cage traps.
