Is Adventure Mode still "Broken"
« on: September 06, 2015, 04:50:19 pm »

Just now coming back to DF.
Should I try v40.-,
or go back to v34.11?

Best to define 'broken' really.
Good enough to compile great stories, less polished than Fortress mode.
Crashes with TWBT (according to some) lags when there's 30,000 goblins nearby.
10-15 years from completion.

The main aspect of AM that concerns me is battle.
I still don't understand the concept of accepting quests,
I remember you not being given...for lack of a better word, gratitude,
for the things you had done, and your quest objectives would run.
Attacking would end up in you being yielded to.

Is this still the case? I've heard a lot of great stories, but "it was inevitable" isn't an appetizing conclusion to me.
Mostly why "broken" was in quotes.

Combat is broken, beating someone straight in the head with a warhammer wont crush the skull.
Sneaking is OP.
Bandits and such are not hostile most of the time.
The undead are nearly invincible.
Shops dont accept currency.
Your fame doesnt spread propperly, so you cant get more followers.
People tell you that you attacked them, while youre attacking them.

As klefenz has pointed out, I think Adventure Mode can best be described as broken currently, yes.

the lack of followers lead to research and discovery of several workarounds... but depends on if you want to either use necromancy, putting companions in a single spot then going out to recruit more like your big boss forming MSF, don't return those kids to their parents and just tell them to wait in your bunker filled with other companions like your bigboss forming diamond dogs.
though due to the returning migrant mechanic you don't get ambushed by bandits twice your companion count so you can overwhelm any opposition(that doesn't have an AOE attack) with enough manpower though.

Plenty of things are still at placeholder status. For example, several weapons don't quite make any sense/don't negotiate the terrain they should, but that's been the case for 34.xx going backwards.

I have been able to gain fame.
And get followers, and my bandits are (mostly)hostile, and the goblins are hostile...  Not broken over here, how long has it been since you played?
Kill some night trolls, and tell them about it they may say "it was inevitable", but the fame stays there, and they react the next time you talk to them properly (calling you a hero, a legend etc)
Skull crushing works when your strength is high enough, but he made bones thicker so that everbodies head wasnt ..an egg, essentially, so I see no problem with that.
Pulping undead works well. and they sill have "hit" points...
(although they are ludicrously tough)
You can trade dwarf mode style with the shopkeepers, so thats fine.
