crashing when trying to save it?
« on: September 06, 2015, 01:55:54 am »

Nothing to do today, jumped on DF for about 4 hours and drank beer, building up my fort and when i try to save it it crash's, just like that 4 hours out the door... kind of makes me want to quit DF forever, or in till this is fixed

So I have to really have to ask why is this a thing?
Any way to fix this? or have a auto save thing?
and last of all, WTF!?!?!

What version are you playing? Are you using DFHack? If so, it's possible one of the plugins/scripts you're using is corrupting your world, in which case playing full vanilla might improve stability.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

My experience is that DF occasionally crashes spontaneously during play and reasonably frequently (1:10 or something) while saving, although the majority of the save crashes occur AFTER the save while cleaning up. So far I've been lucky enough not to get a corrupted save: at the worst lost progress. DF vanilla crashes less frequently than DF with DFHack with minimum scripts plus DT, but it still crashes, both while playing and on save, so my take is that the convenience is worth the higher crash rate.
DF contains an auto save that can save every season (and there may be other frequencies available, such as every year). I elect to save manually fairly frequently and in particular after having set up larger jobs (such as the digging of space for a pump stack or an impulse ramp driven spiral track up from the magma sea).

I'm certainly pissed off when something like that happens, and might want to cool off a while, but it's certainly the case that commercial games are not rock steady either. The time when releasing something that crashes was considered shameful is long gone and if it ever existed, it was embraced only by a small number of developers. We're now in the age of alpha releases (under the name of early access, etc) with beta (late or early) general releases.

You want to quit after losing 4 hours of time?!
Ive lost half a million souls DS2
My pokemon platinum game with all my lvl 100s from previous games est 2000 hours got stolen (lol team rocket)
A three year relationship ended cause I became complacent.
A friend died after getting lost in the bush.
My cat got feline aids and died.
Recently I lost 5 hours in DF cause cpu over heated.
Get over yourself and harden the fuck up son, cause life is going to kick your arse with that pathetic attitude.
I bet you dont even eat food you drop on the ground
Then you come here cry about 240mins.
Btw welcome to bay12 and tough love
So you really want to insult me over me asking why a four hour game crashed?
"Get over yourself and harden the fuck up son, cause life is going to kick your arse with that pathetic attitude." I love it when people with low intelligence and no life can't differentiate between video games and real life. I am pissed off because I lost four hours of playing this video game. What does that have anything to do with real life? In real life I'm a United States Marine, non-commissioned officer, with two tours to Afghanistan under my belt, but oh! I'd better watch out because you with your over 2,000 hours logged Pokemon game might be around the corner! I slept in dirt for months at a time while bullets flew over my head, don't talk to me about "hardening up", mister Pokemon master.

I was a little disappointed with the insults, but I looked up your other posts and you just seem like a mad-at-the-world/have-to-compensate-for-"something" kinda person. If you're really that kind of person, here's a 1-800 number I highly recommend calling for someone with your kind of problem: (1-800-784-2433). Please call that before you hurt yourself or someone you know.

I simply came here to ask why this is a problem and if there is a way to fix it. Not to be insulted.

To the other people who responded, thank you for your advice. And yes, I am using a DF hack that came with my lazy noob pack. I'll just use the vanilla version from now on.

Regardless of whether you use vanilla or use additional tools, I strongly recommend frequent manual saves. That cuts down considerably on frustration when it does crash.
