Dwarfs refuse to smooth stone at priority > 1
« on: August 23, 2015, 02:09:14 pm »

I was trying to smooth a large pit (which still has the floors on all levels).

Since at least mining is horribly inefficient if dwarfs can take jobs at multiple z levels (mine a square, move to different level, repeat), I designate mining jobs with priority shiting per level (ie 2 at first level, 3 at second etc) so they complete a level before moving on.

I did the same for smoothing, but strange enough they just refuse to do it - therapist shows 10 engravers with "no job", even though the walls are accessible. Once I change the priority to 1 they suddenly go into action.

Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is some other engraving job with priority 2 or 1 in an inaccessible location that they decide they want to do, realize they can't, so they drop it, look for a new job, find that nice job in the inaccessible location,... repeat ad nauseam. Possible especially if burrows are the cause for the locations to be inaccessible.

You have some other jobs that your "idle" dwarves are repeatedly taking then immediately canceling. "Item Inaccessible" stockpile hauling jobs are a prime suspect.

Interesting, I'll experiment later if that is indeed the problem. I guess disabling hauling on miners and smoothers would be a workaround as well?

Yes, disabling competing hauling jobs will get rid of the competition (I only use a single Engraver, since that dorf will run out of work soon enough anyway (I'm currently smoothing the 3:rd cavern as work therapy)).
However, the rest of your work force will still suffer. I find cancellation spam happens when civilian alerts are enabled, so my strategy regarding caverns is to use the alert to get everyone out of the cavern in question, and then I close the drawbridge until the threat goes away/I've upgraded my entrance to FB killing status. After the drawbridge is closed the spamming goes away, but I then also disable the alert (allowing me to retreat from some other area, if needed).

"Now Urist, you've been idling long enough. The boss wants you to take a job. We've got a massive area marked for smoothing..."

"Is it an emergency?"

"What? No, just a normal smoothing job."

"Let me see that list of jobs... Hmm, aren't we still under civilian alert?"

"Yes."

"Alright, I'll take this here lumber hauling job. Make sure you mark that down. By the way, that lumber is out of the burrow, so I'm canceling the job."

"So you'll do the smoothing job, then?"

"Nah, I already picked a job. Find someone else."

*sigh*
