I think I read that enemies will not run through known regular traps, but do they respond the same way to known upright spike traps operated by switches?

Enemies will run through regular traps, while it's in the future development to get enemies to react intelligently to having been beaten by traps along a certain route. However, enemies who have sent spies (a.k.a. diplomats) to locate traps will not trigger the known ones when they attack. Since menacing spikes are not triggered by the invader, such enemies should get properly punctured by them. ("Yes, I know there is going to come a lot of spikes puncturing me when I pass that tile as I can see them piercing the air regularly, so I'll try really hard to dodge. Ugh! Didn't work...").

I assume this is handled by giving those well-learned enemies "trapavoid" for those known traps, but since trapavoid does not work for upright spikes, it doesn't help the enemies?

I don't think "trapavoid" is used, since that's a global skill. I think that the known traps are listed in some "examined traps" list instead, but it technically ends up as the same thing.

I'm pretty sure that TRAPAVOID just means the creature won't set off weapon traps, stone fall traps, cage traps, and pressure plates,  unless stunned or webbed.

Yeah, but that's for an entire creature species IIRC.
