Where are all the vampires?
« on: August 11, 2015, 05:20:47 pm »

I have yet to get a vampire in v40. Are they super rare or am I doing something that stops them from showing up or revealing themselves?

I found much less vampires in df2014 than in df2012 both in adventure and fortress mode, so maybe they're more rare indeed if more players notice this.

The last i had was a human vampire that was not even hiding that he was a vampire and was the diplomat of a human civ on my fort, and those ai reactions are so broken that none of my dwarves ever tried to kill or at least run away from that beast and just walked along as if it was a normal npc and not a damned thing, i had to use my kill order from the squad to destroy that unholy blood sucker.

I hope this "obvious" vampire and the lack of reaction from the npc to its revealed presence will get fixed in next version.

I believe, though I have not confirmed, that the recent dearth of dwarven vampires is because dwarves no longer build temples during worldgen, because of the new generated dwarf sites. Since they don't build temples, they can't profane them, and thus cannot be cursed with vampirism.
Occasionally a dwarf who had previously lived in a human town (where they still have temples) might get cursed and move to your fortress under an assumed name. I think that's possible, but its unlikely.
Hopefully the next version, which deals with temples (etc.) will reintroduce dwarven temples and fix the problem.
As for adventure mode: vampires do seem a little more rare, though if you generate a long history you tend to get absurd numbers of animal-man vampires.

I think I'm somehow getting all your missing vampires.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And that's just a slow day for me.

I typically generate worlds with 23 vampire curses and I find myself up to my eyeballs in the damned leeches. It's sometimes difficult to tell the 'true' vampires from the modified ones with extra powers I put in, but all bloodsuckers are the same to me as far as killing goes, and there's plenty of killing to go around.

You can use the cursecheck command to find out if and how many cursed creatures are on map. 'cursecheck verbose' will tell you all the tags they have too, in case you're looking for a specific type of cursed creature. It's only cheating if you use the command while highlighting someone with the look cursor.

Be sure to let your world generate for at least a couple of hundred years if you want curses to crop up. Also, if you choose a thriving civilization, there will simply be more migrants (and more possible filthy bloodsuckers) to choose from. Other than that, it's just luck whether one will actually come to visit.

I'm still on .19 so maybe things changed..
Medium world, 1050 year history.
I *think* I set vamps down to 7 in advanced
parameters, but maybe that's up?
Anyhow 16 years in this fort I've got 3.
Locked in 2*2 rooms.
Wish I could give them to you, all they do
Is kill legendaries till caught.
I should have removed them like I did
werecritters, ever look for bite victims in a
400+ dwarf fort? Not fun.

I always turn up all the fun features (except for bogeymen). In one world I had it turned to 5 times the usual for world creation I think, and I had two or three vampires among about 150 dwarves. That was in v40.23 though.

Recent fortresses have either had a small migration count (Violentlash, my current running fortress, only had 42 migrants) or didn't live long enough for vampires to really show up ... god damn necromancers...

In adventure mode I often found them all bunched up in one spot. You'd then have like 20+ vampires roaming around ONE city, often having drained the complete city not just of blood, but also of the living themselves already...
