Vanishing Seige?
« on: August 03, 2015, 05:12:05 pm »

OK, so this time I embarked within site of a Necromancer tower, in search of some !FUN!. And sure enough, in spring, I got the message "Your enemies have lain seige to the fortress!" and it zoomed in on a hoard of approaching undead. I saved the game (just in case of crashes), got prepared, went back -- and instead of a hoard of undead, I had a single elvish bandit crossbowman. WTF?

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

The undead siege message is "The dead walk. Hide while you still can!"
Could it have been some sort of bandit siege?

I had the exact same thing, posted about it in the invaders thread.

It is a necromancer civ siege, the message I had was "Intruders! Drive them off!"
Then the necro and corpses went off the map.
Legends counted it as  a siege, creating engravings and such.

Since then in that fort, a FB has shown the same behavior, disappearing after coming onto the map.

I've deleted the world due to these reasons, so no bug report from me.

Pirate Santa -- yeah, it wasn't the usual undead message, but there were definitely a bunch of undead at the edge of the screen when it auto-zoomed me.

Something similar just happened: I got the "The enemy have come, and are laying siege" message, and it autozoomed me to a handfull of human bandits at the edge of the map. They walked back off the map almost immediately -- seige lasted about five seconds. So it sounds like something similar to what you were experiencing, Camulus.

EDIT: and, approximately 30 seconds later, "A vile force of darkness has arrived!". Lets see how long the goblin seige lasts.

EDUT AGAIN: six goblins, three rushed into my hall-o-traps, three are stuck on the edge of the map, neither entering or leaving. I'll send the marksquad after them. Casualties so far: one cavy sow got hit by a goblin copper bolt.

This is not unusual. Its most likely just a band of wandering undead passing through your fortress on the world map. Ive had that plenty of times

Necromancers will get bored and leave eventually if there's no path into the fort, even during a seige. However, that's not a seige notification you received--that's a someone-caught-a-stealthy-necromancer-trying-to-sneak-into-your-fort-without-being-noticed-and-animate-your-corpses notice. If you get that message, it means that the necromancer will now make a break for the edge of the map, because their plan was to attack you from within. Best way to deal with that: put cage traps around the path they take to the fort and you can have your own pet necromancers to reanimate your bacon.

If you haven't revealed the whole of a cavern by exploring it, FBs will wander into the unexplored areas and disappear from the units list until they wander back into explored areas. They're not on the units list so that (a) if you haven't explored the whole cavern, you won't know about FBs until they're at your proverbial doorstep, (b) so you might forget about ones already on the map if you choose to adopt a turtle-up-and-never-explore-the-caverns approach...and then when you see the error of your ways, the FB is there to welcome you...and (c) because you're not supposed to be able to pinpoint the location of the unexplored reaches of the caverns, which you could do if it remained in the units list.

Ah, I wonder if the humans who sieged for all of three seconds were actually the army of the (friendly) neighboring human civilization marching to attack the elves (with whom they are at war). (I had assumed they were bandits because the human civilization was still listed as friendly).

Friendly humans? I wouldn't trust it. The Tall Ones or up to something, or they'd put their trade goods way up where their mouths are and quit bringing garbage every year. Human-sized tunics? Cloth woven by the clothier's three-year-old brother and then clumsily dyed by a blind drunk off the street? A few bars of very common metals? Bah! These aren't the trade goods of people who sincerely want dwarves as customers, despite all their talk about the value of international trade. I'll bet they're just spies trying to find a safe way into your fort, and that any human sieges you get will know right where any traps those "traders" passed are...
