The Immortal Draltha
« on: July 25, 2015, 01:58:25 am »

So this fortress was going nice, I hit a HUGE cave expanse, my hunters are owning giant spiders like nothing. Then a few days later things.... things get strange. Draltha's are disovered deep in the cavernous expanses, apparently they are herbivores of sorts eating mushrooms in the darkness and keeping to themselves. So my hunters decide to hunt these buggers and they ARE TOUGH. Like an entire quiver of bronze bolts from the Caravans was unloaded on one+ a few days before a single of these buggers die.

A month later one of my hunter tracks one of these dralthas up to my dwarven fortress! I get my militia together and by now I only have bone bolts until the caravan arrives. And no metallic weapons to speak of since I haven't gotten a single metal smith yet!(Wasn't really in the mood for grinding one up). So I have about 5 of my marksmen dwarves just UNLOAD all the bone bolts that have been pumped out of three workshops for about a month, and IT DOESN'T DIE. On top of this it keeps moving! Into the epicenter of my fortresses trafffic. Then my entire squad sits around this draltha and starts punching it like its an never ending circle jerk. This has been going on for a month so far, and my production is crippled, while all my marksdwarves won't disengage to pickup the now huge stockpile of bone bolts that could kill the thing!

What do I have to do to kill this thing? Drop it into a clown pit? GG

Any metal bladed weapon - preferably a spear - should do serious enough damage to kill it. Dralthas are huge and tough, though. I've seen dwarves beat on a giant toad for a month before someone put a pick through its head.

Disengaging some of your dwarves, once they've gotten in combat, should be more or less impossible. I don't know if they will stop to eat and drink. They might.

Either way, your best shot is to make something sharp and see if you can draft a dwarf with an actual weapon.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?

I'm waiting on a caravan before I can even think of killing that thing sadly. As for eating/ drinking they've managed by routing into the dining hall every now and then rofl. On top of all this the Draltha is sitting at the stairs which is seriously  impeding me from making anything sharp. Or even smelting(I have some galena sitting around at least). I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope that I pull through before goblins, monsters. Or undead start bursting through the gates. (Evil, Necro tower nearby)

Miner's picks are very good weapons, especially when the dwarf is also a legendary miner, because mining counts as proficiency in pick-weapons. Assign your miner into a squad, equip him with the pick and let him whack away at it, he should be able to kill it.

I would but my lumberjack, and my two grandmaster+ miners got caught in the fight. :(

EDIT: Welp, my fortress got owned, luckily I was able to jump back on the save file before it happened. I prefer to ironman, but this was just straight up silly.

Have you seen the size of those things?  If they are aggroed, they can easily rampage through a fortress of dwarves.
