designations not working

I designated engraving of walls but nothing happens. I can't even remove the designation, it's not there!
Has this ever happened to you? What should I do now?

Are these perhaps constructed walls? Only natural ones can be engraved.

Are they smoothed natural walls? You can't engrave rough stone.

If they are smoothed natural walls, my guess would be that they are inaccessible to your dwarves.
