Back on the "double FPS" topic... Today I tryied to change the settings from "normal" to "high" in the init file, and it resulted in some quite heavy lag. I switched it back to "normal"...

This setting doesn't really help anything.

If you were to run DF in parallel with another CPU hogging process, like another game, then increasing the priority would speed up DF at the expense of slowing down the other game. In other cases it's pointless.

Also, you see, perceivable lag isn't the same as the actual lag. Sometimes DF may run at very low FPS but the user interface is still responsive. When you raised priority, DF might have started getting more CPU time than certain system processes, which decreased the responsiveness of the game.

Lag in the game, or lag in switching to and using other applications and always-on programs (like a virus-checker)?  See if both shutting down external apps /and/ setting DF to "high" priority works any better for you.

The ignorance pertaining to Vista in this thread is astounding. Everyone loves to knock it because it's the newest Microsoft product, but noone seems to remember every other version of Windows having a period of instability and driver issues when it was new. XP was the same way, 98 and 95 were even worse, etc.

I've been running Vista Ultimate 64 bit for over six months now, and have yet to find a single program that won't run, hardware that it doesn't immediately recognize and install drivers for, etc. It doesn't crash, it doesn't run slow, and it does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Do some reading before you go bashing things you know little to nothing about. And a few reviews of Vista from a year ago don't count as reading.

If you want better FPS just delete all the animals and play an empty world.

It was heavy lag in the game. I was barely able to move, one key press often resulted in 3 screen moves, and it took me 30 minutes to finnaly realised that I switched the "normal" setting to "high" to do in 10 minutes what I did in those 30 minutes. Both game and interface lagged heavily.

You're assuming way too much. I personnaly bash Vista because it's a memory hog, needs a beast to run, and all that for what? A virtual copy of XP with incredibly cheesy and flashy graphics as a trade off which need one year or two to flatten all the stupid bugs inherent to a new version while at the same time wiping all the compatibility with older versions (especially DOS)?

That's exactly what I doesn't want a OS to do. So excuse me if it's only common sense for me to bash Vista...

XP didn't have .NET integration and backwards compatibility was thrown to the wind long ago anyway. But let's not turn this into a bashing thread.

It seems there is a running fad on these forums to be paranoid of unknown files, automated installers and commercial technologies. It's cute, in a retro way, so it's best to turn a blind eye on it and take it with a smile   ;)

Where is this setting and what exactly does it do?  I have a fairly decent computer and around 50 dwarfs and lava.  It is currently running around 7 FPS.  Any help would be great.

You'll need to find your graphic card setting and disable it from there.

VSync ought to be the most useless power hungry program ever created to make graphics pretty yet.

To all:

Maximizing Framerate is the current wiki page on how to make DF run faster.  Please post (or add yourself) new and corrected information.  Advice from you, ToadyOne, would be doubly appreciated!
