How do you get back to DF when you're burned out?
« on: August 01, 2015, 09:06:05 pm »

Not the usual query I realize, but I wasn't sure what forum is appropriate here.  Anyways, my situation is thus; I started a Community Fortress, and after a few months, became overwhelmed by the sheer scale of everything involved- mega projects, story telling, media edits, etc.  ~3 weeks ago I started a new gig, which has contributed to my lack of mental energy.  I have been rereading my favorite stories from the HoL and thinking about the next steps in my Fortress.

However, I'm still having difficulty mustering the metal energy needed to commit to another round of DF.  So I'm curious how my fellow Dwarves get back into the swing of things after time away.  Incidentally, I have the same problem with Minecraft & Terraria- I start with a grand ambition, make significant progress, then burn out from lack of interest and/or cooperation, leaving the project 60% finished.  Any insights are appreciated :)

hey, there is no actual - in real life - need for you to care about dwarf fortress. Just take a break from it. If it's still interesting, then dabble - read a story when it's fun to do so. Donate some money from your new gig (I think toady would even give you a crayon drawing if you did so).

Burnout happens when we get really obsessed about things. If it's about something as minor as a game - no problem taking a break.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

I'm with malimbar04 on this. Personally, I'm just back from a df hiatus that lasted most of 2015 and the game is now refreshingly fun again. Definitely don't feel duty-bound because you're OP on a community fort--you could always hand the reins off to an active participant. Enjoy yourself, and when and if you get the urge to play again, remember that df is just like riding a bike: veering madly through fast traffic and hoping like hell you don't get run over and don't fall off and hit your head, but you feel the rush of air around you and think--no, know--that you're better than all the plebs you see walking or driving.

...I seem to have lost the thread of my remarks.

Edit: "reigns" ≠ "reins"

Well it looks like you've already found forum mode, most of the drive I get to play comes from here to be honest. Like reading about how sensitive dwarves are now and wondering "how many gobs need to burn to death in a glass window cage in the main hall before that problem is fixed?" (2 sieges worth, less if you remember to lock everyone in, beware of crops rotting if you include trolls as you can acidently fireproof them and have to wait for death by magma blunt force trama). Or reading a military tthread and deciding everyone that likes warhammers is going to be a weaponsmith because I want a platinum artifact hammerdwarf to lead my squad of silver lashers.

Sound advice all around :)  I think staking out a turn of a Succession Game will help too; I can refamiliarize myself without a long term commitment.  Simply spark that Dwarven spirit, as it were.  Now if only I could do the same for my Terraria & MC Fortresses :P  Cheers Dorfs!

You could take a hiatus until the new version comes out.  I am not sure how much more work Toady needs to do, but hes gotten most of it by the sound of his updates (he did taverns, art forms, performing troupes for worldgen, scholars and library+woldgen, enabled all this for adventure mode, and set up temples completed with curses in both as well).  A month or two? *shrugs*

Another thing to do is to shake things up.  If you find all of your forts are the same, try settling in a completely differet biome, with a different fort set up, while utilizing industries you typically overlook. You could also try special rules, like never using cage traps, no metal, only trade for food, etc.
