Hunters vs Soldiers
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:58:00 pm »

In my 1st fortress, I had some hunters. But they often got hurt, even killed by wolves. Worst thing is you can't control their path.

Now I have some soldiers. I let soldiers stand near some animals, and they will kill all animals nearby. Then I build animal stockpiles over corpse, let soldiers guard the piles until butchers come.

That works pretty decently, except its a ton of micromanagement. My preferred method is to train hammerdwarf soldiers, then when they get decent armor/hammer/wrestling skills, draft them as a hunter. Give them a crossbow, and send them out. They can still wear the old armor they wore, I have one hunter in iron chainmail. Their crossbow skill will suck, but it rises fast enough, and when they run out of bolts they use it in melee with hammer skill. Since they were hammer dwarves they should smash wolves up pretty easily.

I thought you could set them to have two weapons, so they could carry both a crossbow and a hammer?
Plus I'm pritty sure there is away to get your hunters to wear chain/plate mail via the militry weaoins prefrence screen.

I thought they can only carry 2 weapons of the same type.

Pretty sure its 2 of the same type, and it's only beneficial if the dwarf somehow drops one of them. They only attack with one at a time, so if one weapon gets smacked away, he still has the other to use.

Of course, if a dwarf somehow drops his weapon, it probably means he is about to pass out or die shortly after. Dual wielding is pretty useless currently.

Hi!

I was wondering, wouldn't dual weapons be useful if the dwarf was carrying edged weapons like axes? After all, they have a tendency to get stuck in things like unicorns, so there is a chance to lose the weapon (although a dwarf meeting a unicorn is actually bad news (T_T) ).

Probably useful in adventure mode, you tend to loss your weapon/limbs in adventure mode. Also weapons tend to get stuck in wound (hmm, maybe that's why somebody like hammer/maul).

Shields beat dual wielding in every possible way. If you lose an arm with 2 weapons, you will have another weapon! But if you had a shield, you wouldn't have lost that arm.

Shields are extremely effective in combat, whereas hitting with one weapon at a time isn't so much. Even if something gets stuck in a wound, unless they are unable to feel pain, they are going to pass out from the pain and blood loss soon.  And if your strength is sufficient, you can rip out the weapon and cause massive blood loss.

Totally forgot about that. Yeah if you lose your weapon, and you have a shield, you can shieldbash with it. I'm not sure of the strength, or even the specific skill in its use, but it definitely happens. I've shattered skeletons with it.

Those things are armed? I have only encountered one, in fortress mode, when it came in as a resident monster. It arrived naked, and was swiftly turned into a dining hall ornament.

Never said I didn't believe you, but good stuff anyway  :)

And good, a dirty thrower died. Throwing is totally nonsensical right now, Toady needs to add that to the pile of 'make this make sense'.

Butterflies should not be as effective as elephants when thrown.

All my men died: The shot glances away! The shot glances away! The shot glances away! The shot glances away! ....
But that small rock hurt it. Quite amazing.
