"Stray Gremlin (Semi-Wild) has gone berserk!"?
« on: June 20, 2015, 09:21:52 am »

What's happening?

I caught two Gremlins and trained them and let them roam, trying to get myself a Gremlin Mayor. After the first one went wild I put it down, and as the second one went semi-wild I caged it (in a cage together with two Kea Men and a Hamster Man). Then I suddenly got the message in the Subject line. The Gremlin is bonded to one of the 3 animal trainers, and there isn't a whole lot of animal training to do (actually only this Gremlin since a while, and only a handful of animals before that, something a single trainer has had no problems with in past fortresses).

Trainers only train wild animals in a cage.  Semi-wild animals are trained in zones with training enabled.  (To make things easier, make it a pasture that holds that animal, and also the training zone.)  Trainers will repeatedly visit the animals to keep taming them up to around +training+ level.

If you are taming gremlins, then they aren't full members of your society, and they aren't likely going to become a mayor.  In any event, I would only try to do so with domesticated animals, which require children.

I haven't seen it mentioned that Gremlin Mayors would have to be domesticated children, so I thought Gremlins might be exceptions to the usual domestication rules.
I haven't bothered with training zones in the past, mostly because I keep most undomesticated animals in cages, but also because it seemed that keeping them in pastures were enough (cave spiders have been retrained while pastured in a silk farm, for instance, and I've also managed to keep some cave critters retrained while pastured [so they could produce offspring]), I probably should use training zones, though. However, I put the Gremlin in a cage so an animal trainer should be able to retrain it while safely caged, but while berserked it seems stuck at semi-wild, and I certainly don't want to let it out in that state.
I've never encountered an animal going berserk before (but I haven't had any dorfs do it either, which I know can happen).

Sentients who are members of your fort need to sleep at regular intervals. If they fail to sleep for several months, they go mad. Creatures in cages cannot sleep.

I ran into this by accident when i made dogs sentient. Half a year after i caged a bunch of excess dogs, i got something like a dozen insanity messages all spawned on top of the cage.

Thanks Larix!

That sort of explains it. I saw it was very drowsy and wondered why, since I thought only dorfs slept. I guess berserk means it's beyond recovery, so I'd have to get rid of it and catch a new mating pair (the traps have been reset, but no visitors have been triggered them).

Larix, wasn't that for dwarven child care that you made dogs sentient?

No; i tried to get a dog mayor. Unfortunately, being sentient alone isn't enough. They may need to be historical persons too or somesuch, i don't know. I've never been involved in dwarven child care (the Girlinhat kind of dwarven ...childcare, that is).
