simple, instead of knowing where the dorfs are and hunting them down, the go in, take all lot of your stuff, put it in bags and leave with it, killing people that get in the way. Bandits, goblins, kobolds & maybe humans will send special raiding bands that come to steal stuff for their settlement, it could be a way for civs that can't farm to get food. Your dorfs that don't resist (yield) will be forced to drop their stuff. The raiders would raid stockpiles & rooms for metal, children (if their goblins), clothing (that fits the raiding creature), high value things (gems) and food. Once the raiders have their bags full they will leave, leaving a ravaged fort behind. While you can still survive it would be very hard. If you don't want anyone to die you could tell everyone in the fort to yield. But doing that would force you to open all gates and doors to the enemy. Their should still be invasions that attempt to kill everyone in the fort, like site takeovers.

Maybe the ability to give a "tribute" so as to not be attacked.

It could benefit both parties:

• The defenders could buy the "benefit" to not have some of their buildings destroyed and risking assaults and murders in addition to losing their properties
• The attackers could have their loot from a less "tiring" fashion

I like the general concept. I could see bandit groups performing raids like this, as their current method of sieging like any standing army is just kinda silly.

I think it would be nice if invaders had a goal in mind and might actually accept surrender. Possible options
Tribute: They will take some of your stocks, and leave, assuming you let them have enough and don't attack
Slave raid: They will demand that you surrender a fraction of your adults. They will escort them away to their site
Justice: If their people have died in your fort they will name those they deem responsible and take them away to face judgement
Eviction: Surrender and you will lose, but your people will stay alive. Basically, abandoning for to invaders
Extermination: Well, you just pissed them off, now die

Obviously, surrender would be quite a hit to mood in the fort.

i already had it say that you could surrender & let them take your stuff, through you could make it so that since you surrender they take less of your stuff

you could fake surrender & ambush them somewhere instead of just immediately losing during an eviction.
