Or you could just make a copy of the save.

You can also make a copy of the save and retire it then start an adventurer there, or if you have dfhack installed you can modeset to arena, then assume control of a dorf and check out the neighborhood.

Best yet, before you start a fort: take an adventurer and explore the map some or at least get some rumors and sites located before retiring them, they stay visible as I recall when you start a fort afterwards.

You can also copy the save, retire, and then launch Legends Mode, dump the xml, and export all the maps, and you can use Legends Viewer or World Viewer to have a searchable full-world history and population count.
