Battles of Norghan - Anyone play this thing?
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:22:01 pm »

So I like fantasy turn-based strategy games and typed exactly that phrase into Yahoo's search engine and found this game. It's a gladiator game mixed with turn-based battle type games and sports management games. I like it, but unfortunately the game's creator is nowhere to be found and the forums on the site are closed. I've got questions, but there's no one around to give answers. Anyone here know about it?

Thanks.

Looks fun!  15 bucks is a bit hefty considering I just bought Red Orchestra 2 for 24 bucks though.

Yeah it's fun, but it also requires a fair bit of strategy. What kind of units do you recruit? How do you equip them? Do you go for bash or get a group of wizards? Usually in deeper games (like DF) I turn to the forums for insight. But there's nowhere to go with this one.

For what it's worth (if anyone wants to try it) I'd suggest recruiting a minotaur or some other big guy and at least one wizard with fireball. Minotaur keeps the enemy occupied and away from the wizard while you try to toast their best fighters with fireballs. That seems a successful place to start for me and you can build your clan from there.

Oh no I've never played this game yet.  I'm at work right now but I'll try the demo when I get back.  Is it pretty deep?  Does it look like something you can finish quick or can you play for a long time?  I'll probably buy it the next time I get paid.

There is a lot of depth. There's something like 22 races you can pick from when recruiting your team. But you only have a certain amount of money so you need to plan well. Recruiting units costs money as does equipping and training them. Units can be tailored to different ends (like elves can do well as mages, fighters, or archers) or as some hybrid.

The game is won when your clan advances to the first division and wins there. But the game is played through a series of gladiator-type matches where your team squares of against another. You win, you get paid and use that money to equip and further train your fighters. Each battle goes by pretty quick, so if you only have 15 minutes to play that's fine. But I don't think you'll finish the game quickly. In fact, it probably would take quite a while. If you get it, let me know what you think.

I'll try out the demo today.  Was busy moving stuff out of my apartment.  I noticed on the screenshots that it looked like when you upgrade weapons it's a clear incremental path.  I didn't see anything that suggested magic or unique weapons being sold or if you can find it.  I guess I should just play it though to see though...

I would like to try it, but it just crashes on start-up.  Bummer.

There was a patch (v. 1.056) released a couple of days ago. The game now works on newer operating systems as well and thus does not crash on start up.

That's one helluva necro. I wonder what the game's like?

Anyone else find it incredibly weird that their website seems to primarily be advertising casino sites?
