Ok, so I'm going to sound like an idiot, but I have a picture of a yellow car I took from online:

And make the yellow car be red but still have the lights, tires and windows still stay the same color. I'm not good enough in GIMP to figure this out. I know there's a process to take the colors of the car (specific ones) and replace them, but me having no experience with GIMP, I have NO idea what I'm doing.

Can I get a few pointers as what to do and maybe some extra help for a beginner for GIMP?

I would actually love to know a precise way to do this. You can always try the ol' Colors > Color Balance thing, but the only tool I've ever used that lets you pick particular colors on an image and fuck about with them is MGI Photosuite. Which is not free. Then again, I probably just haven't looked hard enough. Anyway, if all else fails, you can always figure out the color you want and use the Color Picker select (next to the Magic Wand) and the Paintbucket (set to Fill Whole Selection).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I don't know how to do the process I suspect you want. It'd probably involve saving as a .gif first, to auto-set indexed color mode and save it with only a few shades, then re-opening it to edit.

I do have a fast way, though! With GIMP:

Open the image.
Use the select-by-color tool, next to the magic wand. (Shift-O)
Select the shades you want changed, by shift clicking. I see four shades that need selecting.
On the menu at the top of the image, hit the Colors > Colorize drop-down menu.
Play around with the hue slider.
Save and done.

Edit: Image > Mode > Indexed (11 colors for this image), then Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Colormap.

That helped immensely. I now have a bright red car for my programming assignment. Thanks!
