Werebear Whoop!
« on: June 06, 2015, 07:23:46 am »

I just had my first combat experience a few days ago. It was rather one-sided. This reminds me why a military is important. To be precise, it was a Werebear that killed 3 of my dwarves and injured two. A few minutes later... I'm looking in my improvised hospital, and I see two newly minted werebears. That chucked out half my fortress' population. And made me try to get some coffins done- to no avail. Pretty much the same for military. And apparently my broker is a legendary miner.

Pity I don't have any screenshots of the attack.

yeah were fuckers are pretty fun that way...

i suggest having an armor stand in your hospital. and if your dorf gets bitten by  a were beast, then move your military in there to train while waiting for them to turn.

or just outright kill the bugger with traps...both work.

my first military encounter was pretty similiar to yours btw

Hm. Decent traps are going to be installed soon, and I'm working on a set-up that lets crossbow dwarves shoot at any invaders through the main tunnel without being attacked in melee. Unfortunately my melee department is lacking.

A Werebear was my first combat experience as well.
But thx to Kogan Nishuker I could continue with my game!

He was the only trained Axe-Dwarf.
He had 3 recruits, but didn't have enough time to prepare them for what was coming. :/
None of them had armor.

They died as heroes and will always be remembered in Sprinkledbusts.
Kogan and his 3 recruits (who could only bite, punch and kick).

Kogan killed the beast alone ... I was already having the hope, that he'd survive, after he dodged so masterful for quite some time.
But in the end, the Beast was ripping apart Kogan's throat. And immediatly after that it died of its wounds.

My were-whatever experiences tend to involve more "wardogs getting eaten whole while the dwarves run for safety".

Also, doors.  Werecritters can building destroy, but it takes time, and time is the big limiter on their power.  If you have a stack of doors between them and your dwarves, they'll never make it in time.  A series of doors with a drawbridge behind them lets you lockdown and the doors buy the leverpuller time.

Fun experience when a werebadger attacked my fort. Killed a dog and maimed a gemcutter before it died in a hail of crossbow bolts and axes. Unfortunately a month later said gemcutter transformed into a werebadger one day while cutting gems. She made her way down to the dining hall and all hell broke loose. In a panic I quarantined the hall after she had transformed back and waited long enough to watch the survivors transform and start killing each other.

When there were no unturned dwarves left I waited till they all tranformed back to normal and released some untrained bears into the dining hall.

I plan on truning that dining hall in to a blood temple to Armok.

Drawbridges are now un-building-destroyable by anything unless you attempt to bring a bridge down on a creature of sufficient size.
