My military comes in three flavours.
1) Royal Guard/Fortress Guard who stumble into the wrong place; equipped with crossbow, leather armour and buckler. Either male or female, usually female.
2) Dedicated marksdwarves; equipped with crossbow, leather armour and buckler. Either male or female, usually female.
3) Dedicated melee; plate, shields, and at least one squad of three equipped with each weapon plus wrestlers. Almost invariably male. Whenever a member of a squad reaches Lord training (you know, Elite Wrestler, Swordmaster etc) I promote him to being in charge of his own squad and conscript a couple of dwarves with redundant skills to join in.

Considering their sometimes suicidal tendencies, it's probably smart to make fortress guard mostly marksdwarves. Good idea!

Also, considering that they normally get tasked with eliminating berserk dwarves...

If I'm on ground level, I'll dispatch axedwarves.

If there's any chance at all of a ten or more story fall, or a fall into magma after something's been bashed in, hammers everywhere.
