This is probably a stupid question, but do weapons and metal armor wear out at all. And while on the subject do mechanisms wear out too?

No, no, and no. Metal armor can wear out when put in a refuse stockpile by accident, but that's it. Worn weapons and mechanisms can be found in tombs and only there.
