Warning when building pump stacks
« on: May 05, 2015, 07:59:18 pm »

Just learned this, but if you specify all the pumps to be built all at once (hanging them off each other), if you save and reload, the pump stability is checked before checking with all the pumps designated.

Basically, if the top and bottom pumps are stable, but all the rest are hanging, all constructed pumps which are located somewhere between unconstructed pumps will deconstruct, which might throw some components to the pump's output tile (which generally would be inaccessable). This can also completly break "fast" pump stacks (where you build from top to bottom).

Designate them from bottom to top and suspend them all, unsuspend them top to bottom, I've never had a problem with them falling apart like this and they basically teleport magma from the bottom to the top when activated.

When you say unsuspend top to bottom, do you mean all at once? Or unsuspend, wait for them to build, then unsuspend the next one?

Always a safe default assumption in this game

The latter: build them 1 at a time. If you don't, they deconstruct.

The purple overseer hat weights heavily on one's head. Some would argue that the leadership of Doomforest is uneasy to bear for too long. Others would simply suggest that we don't craft the next overseer hat out of rutile.

Yup, and when you do it like that the way the game calculates the fluid movement works out so it kinda skips straight to the top output.

I build a horizontal axle in front of each pump in a stack. This keeps them stable until the entire stack is constructed. Then you can deconstruct the axles to reclaim the logs.

I also like the axle strategy.  It lets you build in parallel.  Which doesn't matter as much unless you've got lots of architects, but hey.

Very good idea, actually.
