Spontaneous Demotion?
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:47:48 am »

I'm running DF 0.40.19. I was a barony, but for some reason I've now stopped being a barony. The baron and baroness consort are still very much alive and kicking, but the fortress is now just a metropolis. There has been an elven caravan that left without me trading anything because my broker was obsessed with building traps in obscure corners of the fortress, but apart from that I can't see any reason for the demotion. Any ideas what's happened? Also, will I be offered a barony again?

It might be political.  The king might have demoted him or something.  That seems to happen with trade liasons occasionally, why not barons?  The trade liason would probably come with the news.

Interesting... What sort of dwarven politics is there implemented at the stage? Will keep things updated once the liaison arrives.

Metropolis is the rank of town itself, not (anymore) related to noble title. You can have a city with a baron or hamlet with duke, for example.
You can check the titles in the civ menu to make sure, your noble in charge should be in the list with other barons and officials.

The mist clears, and the plot thickens...

The baron died, killed by a forgotten beast. Just my inobservation. But...

I've now got a merchant who does not live at the fortress listed as baroness in the civilisations menu. Will she arrive as a replacement, or am I condemned to be a common metropolis from here on out?

If she doesn't show up, you could always retire the fort, seek her out with an adventurer, 'convince' her to relinquish the title to someone who does live at the fort, retire the adventurer and reclaim the fort. Simple!

If a baron/count/duke/monarch (or any other position which has the [SUCCESSION:BY_HEIR] token) dies, the title passes to one of their children (if they have any living), regardless of whether or not they live in an appropriate location. This is also how you sometimes end up with nobles of other sites living in your fortress. Unfortunately, I don't believe your new baroness is any more likely to migrate to your fortress than any other historical figure from your civ.
