Your longest running fortress?
« on: May 01, 2015, 02:05:40 pm »

I was wondering what was your longest running fortress on 0.40.x? I'm currently at year 10 with around 70 fps on 3x3 embark, 100 dwarves, 33x33 world. This is somewhat worse than in previous version, but not terrible either, as I'm trying to keep the map rather clean. My goal is to play as long as it's possible.

How long do you usually manage to play before the inevitable happens, that is, the infamous FPS death?

'Melbilonshen', 25 years, 220+ dorfs (and twice that resting in catacombs), brought down to 6 dorfs in 30 minutes of tantrum spiral. Had a waterfall system and an artifact sword called 'The Destruction of Heavens'. Fun fort, it was.

Mine would have been hairytongs.

I forget how many years but a fair bit of work into it and at least one reclaim.  In the end I gave it up because reclaim bugs led to a permanent siege;  the goblins couldn't find them and couldn't leave, and even dwarves frequently got lost.

I've never managed quite as successful a fort ever since.

50+years with 21 dorfs (slightly modified raws with low population goblin sieges).
I stopped playing when I realized none of the dorfs could have children.

As of now, my longest-lived fort had gone about 5 years before the world became too unstable and the framerate groaned.  (Didn't help I had a magma pump stack set up to get magma to power the magma forges and fund the obsidian industry.)

Fortressbowel has been running for 52 years, the majority of the dwarves living there at this point were born in the fortress.

I had two 30+ year fortresses in .34.xx that had nothing to threaten them except boredom. Even FPS death was somehow kept in check.

My longest-running fortress in .40.xx is Searingmines. It had reached full twenty years when half of the population got massacred by clowns; I'm planning to revisit that save someday for a stabilization challenge.

My longest fort lasted maybe a decade I don't remember exactly.  I was breeding cave crocodiles when a fire breathing hadrosaur attacked.  My military should have been able to deal with it, but they couldn't find it because of the smoke.  I eventually lured it to the surface, hoping it would get bored and leave, but apparently it learned to fly and appeared inside an unfinished mushroom tower while I wasn't looking.  Before an epic battle between the firebreathing hadrosaur and our legions of legendary warriors and cave crocodiles could really begin, the FPS turned down to zero and the game crashed.

Since then, I've been doing a lot of modding and frequent new worldgens, so nothing has come close.
