I think you should watch Captduck and Das24680 tutorial's, they are great youtuber's that teach extremely well (i learned with Captain Duck, he is great and Das is very detailed and can help you)

Have fun

Duck has A way but by no means is it THE way. Take all advice with a grain of salt and find your own way once you know the systems Toady programmed in. Figure those out. There's pluses and minuses or nothing but minuses to any tutorial.

Also while not free it is kinda cheap http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920022565.do

I liked it a lot honestly. True you can find all the information through the wiki/reading etc but it is brought together into one spot and is a fun read as well.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide

This was the very first thing I started with. I'd open it up in my main chrome tab, then open up the more in depth guides linked in it in seperate tabs.

Kind of learned stuff in stages as well using the quick guide.  First goal was just trying to figure out the interface.  Then I just went down the quick start guide step by step, and focus'd on seperate areas of the game until I understoof how they worked or at least sort of understood enough to be able to get something basic setup and move to the next step.

People have already linked the wiki, but I wanted to emphasize how useful it is. I play the game with the wiki always open, and if I have a question, I pause, tab to wiki and look things up.

It is incredibly useful.

Or, you can ask here, and most likely someone will point you to where the answer is, on the wiki. :)
