I'm going to Antwerp!
« on: March 13, 2015, 07:55:53 pm »

So, I'm going to Antwerp in about ten weeks for my birthday. I know there's a few Belgians on this forum and besides, people might have visited it before. If you're either of those things, its be nice to know about nice places to go to. I've only got three days to spend there, so I'd like it if any suggestions didn't require daytripping out in the suburbs or similar.
Thanks in advance!

If the Belgians complain, just waggle your finger menacingly in the direction of France.

People from Antwerp are notorious for being some of the most stuck-up people (second to only Walloons, Frenchmen and the rest of the world), etc etc. That's just generic Flemish prejudice against everything and everyone, though, most people are probably nice.

More seriously, I've hardly ever been in Antwerp, except for a school trip to the harbor (which is impressive but not very pretty :P) and visits to the zoo when I was smaller (but I assume you're not going there for the zoo). (I live in a different region of Flanders. Not sure about Ebbor, though (but I'm fairly sure that Sheb is Wallonian))
I personally suggest renting a (possibly electric) bicycle and just visiting public buildings like the town hall, big churches, etc. Google does suggest a lot of museums, though.

This website may also be of help.

Be sure to visit the Antwerp Dragon while you're there.

Seen from southern Belgium, Antwerp is a beautiful city full of nice shops and fascists.

I wonder when Putin will start arming the Wallonians to rebel against the Flemish fascists. He'll make up something about Wallonians having ancient Russian blood or something, I'm sure  :D

- on topic: if you're in Antwerp on, I think, tuesdays, they might still be hosting the traditional "Vogeltjesmarkt" ("Bird market"), which is a nice place to spend a few dimes on oddities.
- funny facts: according to popular myth, Antwerp got is name from a mythical giant having it's hand chopped off, and thrown in the Schelde river at the site of the city. "Hand-werpen" is dutch for "hand-throwing". Belgian language has (at least in some of it's dialects) the habit of barely if at all pronouncing the letter h, hence, Hand-werpen became Antwerpen.

Mostly West-Flemish as far as not pronouncing h is concerned, really.

But yeah, Antwerp is literally nazi Germany and Bart De Wever (major of Antwerp and chairman of the Belgian right-wing party) is literally Hitler.

Do you go to Antwerp, or does Antwerp go to you?

It's not my opinion, but it certainly is a widespread prejudice in French-speaking Belgium. For example, there was no end of press drama about "Dockworkers from Antwerp" doing bad stuff during the recent anti-governmental protests.

I was joking, just FYI. And probably wrong about West-Flemish, I confused the g and h.
