Am I Screwed?
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:28:09 pm »

So the first dwarven caravan, I get the message "No outpost liason? How curious..." and then some migrants arrived. Sadly it was only 2 migrants.
Does this mean I'm stuck with 9 dwarves and their children, because my civ extincted itself instantly?

Check your civ by pressing c. There should be a king or queen, at least, so your own civ can't really die.
So you will get a liaison sooner or later, sometimes you need to wait for some years.

The message "No outpost liason... how curious" doesn't necessarily mean that your civilization is extinct.  I've had that message a couple times but they come back the next year.

For all you know, he tripped and got attacked by wolves. I had a vampire king in legends mode die to wolves.

I haven't gotten to the caravan yet, but my first migrant "wave" consisted of two dwarves with useless professions.
I have a bad feeling we're in the same boat, buddy.

This means that your outpost liason has died and your civilization has not made a replacement. Either because they are extinct, or because they are at war. (if your civilization is about to go extinct, then one of your dwarves could randomly become king)

In my latest fort one of my own dwarves arbitrarily declared herself queen very shortly after embarking. There was no liaison the first caravan season, but they starting showing up later. I've seen this myself.

In the current version, even when your civ is extinct, the game will come up with new migrants from nowhere.

Only for the first two waves. After that, it is dependent on you civ. Since you are getting traders, it is more likely that your civilization is at war. In a few years, another liaison should come.

That hasn't been my experience, even in forts where I have monarchs from embark.

I got no liaison until after the outpost upgraded to a city. When I checked her history later, I found she wasn't appointed outpost liaison until that date.

In my last fort I kept a close look on the legends before and after embarking (savescumming regularly). I embarked with a civilization whose last surviving member for over hundred years was the last king, living as a bandit leader somewhere in the badlands. When I embarked a full set of barons (of fortresses conguered by goblins two centuries ago) and generals popped into existence, most likely just generated by the game. At first I didn't get an outpost liaison but after few years one was similarily created and started visiting my fort, handing out baronhoods and whatnot. At some point the king died of old age on some distant ocean shore and was replaced by a generated new king somewhere.

All this time I kept receiving immigrants up until my population limit. The immigrants had also seemingly just popped into existence outside my fortress borders; no personal history, no relations anywhere, "born of unknown parentage" etc. I was vaguely disappointed about how that whole "dying civilization" business was handled.
