Post office

Reading the other suggestion about paper, I had the idea that it could be effective and nice to have post offices in every nation. They would occassionally come to your fort and bring information about the happenings in the nation, personal letters, diplomatic requests etc. but also you should be able to request military aid in case of invasion. The letter carrying mailman would have to avoid the invaders but imagine the joy of having your fort run over by goblins, when suddenly the Paladins of Cogs appear.

I like it, talking with a messenger would make a nice way to quickly spread rumors around too- when you're trying to build up an adventurer's reputation.

A postal service probably counts as post-1400 technology, but messengers arriving as their own special thing with messages asking for tribute or troops or whatever according to goings-on in the world would be pretty great.

Also talking drums and semaphore (flags) communication. I've heard that those drums have occasionally been used like very loud telephones (to everyone's annoyance).

From my brief look into it the first recorded postal system seems to be Persia 550 BC so its not past the 1400 cut off.

Post offices are an ancient idea, but require a good deal of infrastructure to keep them effective. Decent roads, a stock of good horses (or other mountable creatures) for the messengers and some sort of address system for cities all play an important part in making postal services function. This means that only more prosperous civilizations will have dedicated postal services. That's not to say this isn't a good idea; I'm all for it. In fact, there could be some added depth because invading armies will seek out communication lines to sever, so the capital can only guess based on surviving reports what's going on in contested areas. It'll be interesting to see the effects of bad communication in play during Adventure mode.
