I really loved the old RoN back in the day. It is to Civilization as Sword of the Stars is to 4x games, I think. The cost scaling mechanics on units and buildings was a good idea. The supply wagons, not so much. I used to play with my dad when we bought the game, but when he realized he could not use the same tower rush strats he used in Age of Empires II and Empire Earth he stopped playing. :(

To be fair to him tower rush strats are pretty hilarious in the rage you can glean off of your friends sometimes.  :P
Related to RoN though, it was pretty unique in bringing in new mechanics compared to other RTS games at the time, what I found really interesting how it countered the expansionistic mentality RTS had with the province system.

So how many people build a bunch of cities just to watch the caravans walk around from place to place?
I'll do that when I'm extremely bored
