What does Very Deep Soil mean?
« on: February 28, 2015, 07:48:30 pm »

When reviewing embark location, a site may be described as having "Very Deep Soil".  Does that mean that there's lot's of soil, everywhere?  Or does it mean the soil can only be found very deep in the earth?

It means the surface soil layer is quite thick. You'll have to dig for four-five layers (I forget the exact number) through soil before you'll find any stone.

Thanks.  I hoped it meant that.

Now, I choose an embark location with very deep soil.  Now, I dig into a hillside and I find rock.  I don't understand.

Check how many z-levels it is from that point of rock to the surface.  Also, did you embark across multiple biomes/regions or just one?

You dug into a mountain biome ? Or maybe rocky wasteland.

In my experience, soil starts from the top most ground level.

So it could be like this:

        -------
        -------
      ---------

    A----------
---------------
---------------
---------------
---------------
---------------
---------------

So you may still get stone from the foot of the hill.

Do you have dfhack ? If you reveal then unreveal, it'll help you understand your layer setup.

Also, 'Very Deep Soil' on the embark screen means that there is some spot (probably at least the majority of one of the embark squares) on your embark with thick soil, not necessarily that your entire embark has it.
