Books and translators
« on: March 16, 2015, 04:23:41 pm »

I recently started playing dwarf fortress and I am amazed by the complexity and depth of the game.
I have been looking and I don`t think it is implemented but what if when you sent your dwarves to explore and you found books ( ancient books from other civilizations, depending on the history behind your world) and they were in an ancient language that only one or two dwarves knew ( the translators ) they would start translating it, and they could find important information like location of ancient cities ( not sure if in game ) or enemies.

Would it be a good feature to the game ?

Books are useless (except ones with secrets of life and death), they don't really describe any topic right now, only descriptions like "the writing is serious". Maybe it will change, Toady mentioned:

Next up, the books! Then the festivals.

Now that books have completely exploded I second this suggestion. It'd be nice for there to be books that can teach translations between different languages, and then have the books produced by different civs be in those different languages. It could expand to dialects once voice impersonation is in, like phrasebooks, but in the mean time it'd be nice if some people couldn't naturally talk to each other and an event had to happen to spread language knowledge to a civ or a city.

Since some civs die out in world gen their books would be unreadable for most people unless they found translation books using the old one and another language they could learn or some kinds of Rosetta Stone artifacts. I know having to gesture and display objects to goblins you can't understand is a power goal, this would be a good start.
